February's Birthstone: Amethyst

Amethyst is February's birthstone. Amethyst is quartz that is purple, and naturally comes in shades from light lilac to dark violet. With a hardness of 7 on Moh's Hardness scale, amethyst makes a wonderful and durable gem for use in jewelry, including rings.

Amethyst can be found around the world, and across the United States in places such as North Carolina, Georgia, and Colorado. In my opinion, Maine is home to some of the most beautiful amethyst in the world. Deer Hill in Oxford County, Maine produces absolutely stunning saturated, bright, deep purple amethyst. The custom ring above, named "Bloom", features a gorgeous all-natural Deer Hill amethyst from Maine.

This dazzling 3-carat Maine amethyst is in my collection, waiting for me to create a special home for it. What do you envision for this beauty - a blingy ring? an eye-catching necklace?
